Those that read my review of Gods Of Ruin know I absolutely hated the book. While agreeing with the author's premise that the bigger the government the worse it is, I found the characters unbelievable and the plot not in the least thrilling.Happy to say not so with Mr Morse's prequel Chaos and Kingdom:A Financial thriller. The book is a quick enjoyable read. The characters are multi dimensional, believable and not stupid like the insipid Com deGroot. Having dealt with governmental institutions like the FDA, there is nothing in this book remotely unbelievable. As I write this, the FDA is currently trying to get courts to believe that once your own stem cells are harvested and out of your body, they belong to the FDA who is also trying to get 2 Doctor groups injecting your own stem cells into your joints to cease and desist. What the FDA and it's corrupt leaders try to and succeed in doing is easy to believe.
Without giving up to much of the story, Ur is not the utopia we were led to believe it was in Gods Of Ruin. Corporate oversite is needed but the main protagonist's summation at the end of the book points out oversite by governmental agencies is the worst possible way. He goes on to expound on the need for individual responsibility and neatly ties in how government only aids individuals admitting to nothing and having no consequences to their actions.
But the oversite in Ur is not perfect either. There is even a Socialist faction in Ur that is not explored much but is a fascinating concept.
The only qualm I have is the lack of proof reading. Many typos, a few medical mistakes but these are minor and do not detract from the story or message. Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely and it doesn't matter where the power is located.
I look forward to another Ur saga by Mr Morse especially if it deals with the founder of Ur.

In the first book of this series, Gods of Ruin A Political Thriller, the protagonist is a naive U.S. senator that uncovers a devious government plot. In the free market charter city, Ur, he finds the solution to all our problems. In this follow-up (which is actually a chronological prequel), we have a more experienced pharmaceutical exec who also flees to Ur to escape the encroaching government, but instead finds his troubles only escalate.
In Chaos and Kingdom, the author answers the main philosophical questions left hanging at the end of Gods of Ruin--Is the total free market really the solution? Will there be no corruption or crime in such a place? Here, the villain isn't the government, but rather a big business ideologue who uses the freedom in Ur to take advantage of his employees, his consumers, and other innocents.
Morse has a knack for loading the pages with swift-moving action, and bringing the big ideas of our time into a dramatic plot. IMO, the argument in Gods of Ruin is laid out better than the argument is here, but I still give credit to Morse for looking at both sides of the debate and being truly open-minded about the consequences of libertarianism. For this, everyone can appreciate the tale.
A fantastic modern-day financial thriller, combining elements of corporate greed with an engaging story line that grips the reader from the first page. Morse provides us with a credible story, good characterisation which culminates in a thoroughly enjoyable read! Having worked in financial services myself I found Morse’s portrayal of the players to be realistic and insightful. The dialogue flows well and there are a number of classic lines that really work, such as ‘Man, I’m just a regular guy with a nagging girlfriend and a hefty car payment. I’m just trying to do my job.’ Highly engrossing.
Chaos and Kingdom A Financial Thriller was a good read. I enjoyed the characters and their dilemmas. It jumped around a lot, and I had to "catch up" when the chapters went from one person to another so abruptly. There was some weird poems/quotes in between chapters that I think were there to lend deeper meaning to the whole book, but I found them distracting. I spent time trying to figure out what they meant in terms of the plot, but they didn't always seem to relate. Overall good entertainment and reasonable price for the book. I was recommended this book because I enjoyed The Litigators, and The Hunger Games Trilogy
I felt like this book was both exciting and sad at times. This book will definitely keep your interest and make you question various forms of government. It's a quick read so I suggest adding this to your library if you are interested in political thrillers.
I got this book when it first came out and could have sworn I reviewed it then, but I must not have. Having just finished rereading it, I must recommend it highly. In Mr. Morse's first book, Gods of Ruin, we are introduced to the Charter City of Ur, portrayed as a libertarian utopia with just one law, Harm to none.
The one criticism I have had about that from the beginning is that it invites brinkmanship. In Chaos and Kingdom, a prequel to Gods of Ruin, Morse addresses this very problem. The villain in this story is a venture capitalist, Martin Gall, in Ur who uses the city's charter status to get away with selling defective and dangerous products, and by using his money and influence to corrupt the very government agencies that are supposed to be ensuring the safety of his products before they get to market, pharmaceuticals in the case of the story's main character. Since most of Gall's actions are technically legal in Ur and the law of Ur restricts the ability to investigate him, the security authorities in Ur are unable to stop him. Morse does a great job of showing that, while less government may allow increased freedom, increased freedom requires the individual to manage far more risk on his own. At the same time, using the experiences of Jacob Tanner, the protagonist who produces the pharmaceuticals in question and tries to stop Gall by enlisting the help of the FDA, Morse shows that government oversight is no more likely to prevent the kind of corruption represented by Gall than a freehold like Ur. Well done.
